Assessing what your kitchen already has.

This kitchen didn’t need new cabinetry, countertops or backsplash, which saved the client money and time. Instead, we were able to give the cabinets a small makeover with a fresh coat of paint and new brass hardware. By lightening up the surrounding space, the backsplash almost appeared a different shade when complimented by the other colors in the kitchen. We also kept the convenient location of the appliances, updated the plumbing including the pot filler above the stove. These changes utilized many elements of the kitchen that were already there, allowing the client to invest their budget in other parts of the renovation.

Don’t be afraid to CUSTOMIZE and restructure.

Two of our biggest changes in this kitchen, were the island and range hood. By building out the sides of the island, it feels more substantial in the space and matches the surrounding cabinets. We made sure it didn’t crowd the area, and were able to choose a stool option that added some texture and continuity between the floors and surrounding black granite countertops.

Additionally, we custom built the plaster hood to set it apart from a standard stainless steel option. These changes made the home more unique and custom, by bringing in different elements of texture to create interest, warmth and depth.

Two very large updates we made throughout the house, which had a huge impact on the kitchen, were the new engineered hardwood floors, as well as removing that late 80’s high textured ceiling, leaving a smooth finish. This change alone (which a lot of the time is overlooked), brought this home into the current era.

UPDATE LIGHTING.

Not only does this go for the kitchen, but every room of the house! Changing out your standard light fixtures can completely change the feel of the space and compliment the rest of your design updates. Switching out the pendants above the island, was a nice “cherry on top” for this kitchen refresh. These pendants not only help warm the kitchen with the tie back to brass, but the plaster cone shade helped modernize the space.

Remember the little details.

Details as simple as adding a fresh floral bouquet, or a bowl of fresh fruit, really bring life into the space. Getting nice soap bottles or new drawer organizers keep clutter off your countertops and draw focus to the more substantial parts of your kitchen, like the island. Though these details are small, they make the space feel more pulled together and are noticeable by guests seeing your kitchen for the first time.

TIE IN SURROUNDING SPACES.

Especially in an open concept home, tying in the design themes of one space will help elevate the others. In the Bauer Woods Drive project, we made sure that the kitchen nook and living space complimented the choices in the kitchen. We kept a consistent color scheme and continued the brass accents which add new focal points from different angles of the room.

From adding new styling elements such as counter stools to fresh floral bouquets, to doing some larger alterations like the island and hood, we were able to turn the client’s dream kitchen into a reality!
