Progress Report: Emily’s Office

With a baby on the way, we wanted to add square footage and create a space separate from the home to get work done! Our solution… building an office, as a stand-alone addition to our property!

Though it is a larger project to take on during pregnancy, it was an investment our family was willing to make to maximize our property and make use of the space outside of our home! We had the perfect corner in our backyard to add the office without taking away from the other functional outdoor spaces.

We took several steps to create this space…

  1. Poured a concrete pad for the foundation

  2. Customized a pre-fab shed option

  3. Upgraded the hinges and door handles

  4. Insulated the unit and proceeded to add electrical, drywall, paint, and flooring

  5. Painted the exterior to match the rest of our property

  6. Added designer lighting and furnishings

Styling the space…

Of course we compile moodboards for our own rooms and projects! This one was just as much fun to make, knowing it was going to be a part of my own home. I wanted the design to tie into the elements in our home, while having some unique accents to set the space apart from a traditional office.

For flooring…

We went with a durable hardwood laminate flooring that replicates the look of a natural white oak. We live in Oregon so despite our best efforts, we will track wet feet into this space. We wanted something that will hold up and compliment the rest of the space!

We still have a couple steps on our "'To-Do” list to tie together some loose ends…

  1. Add stairs to the front

  2. Install cabinets across the back wall

  3. Put in beams to wrap the current supports of the unit

Making the space feel like an extension of our home…

My daughter spent a weekend camping and when she came home, she asked if we could call the new addition “The Cabin". It has been called that ever since and is a special part of our home that makes it unique! We are also excited to finish the space with pieces that help us do our jobs with more ease! It’s a quiet space with finishing touches like pin boards, decor and storage.

We’ve already been using it as much as we can and it has provided us with the necessary work/life separation in our home!
